2009 International Conference

The Attractiveness of the Academic Profession: the Management Challenge

The LH Martin Institute, in collaboration with ACER and CHEMP (UNE), is pleased to announce its first international conference: The Attractiveness of the Academic Profession:  The Management Challenge, on October 1-2 in Melbourne. The conference will provide the opportunity to explore the relative attractiveness of the Australian academic profession vis-à-vis its major competitor systems.

It is well recognised that the Australian tertiary system will be facing a massive exodus of senior academic staff over the next 5-10 years.  With the system set for further expansion in the wake of the Bradley Review and the government’s response, this raises the question of how we will be able to balance these challenges.

This conference will draw on the results of a major international comparative study on the changing nature of the academic profession in which some 20 countries participated over the period 2007-2008.  It will also be the first opportunity for the researchers involved to use the international dataset that the project has generated.

Delegates will hear from colleagues in the major regions involved in the study regarding their analysis of the attractiveness of the academic profession and a panel of Australian Vice-Chancellors will share their insights into effective strategies to meet the challenges maintaining and attracting academic staff to the region.   Panel members include:
